Sinosteel E&T Ships the World’s First 2.5 Mtpa HBI Shaft Furnace, Fully Factory-Built

Recently, the world's first 2.5 Mtpa HBI shaft furnace, fully factory-built by Sinosteel Equipment & Engineering Co., Ltd. (Sinosteel MECC), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sinosteel E&T, has been successfully shipped for the Oman project.

Sinosteel MECC undertook the full manufacturing scope of this 2.5 Mtpa HBI shaft furnace. As core production line equipment, it fully demonstrates the company’s technological strength in high-end equipment manufacturing and its ability to support the low-carbon transition of the global steel industry.

Upon commissioning, the project will directly drive carbon emission reduction and industrialization in Oman, while providing key support for the country to build a collaborative industrial chain centered on green power, green hydrogen and low-carbon steel.

Integrated Delivery Model: Full Factory Manufacturing + Modular Transportation

The furnace is a pressure vessel for natural gas/hydrogen-based direct reduction processes, operating across a wide temperature range of 400–1000°C.

Unlike the traditional “factory-made components + on-site assembly” model, this unit is fully manufactured and assembled in the factory before being delivered to the project site by sea. This integrated delivery model minimizes on-site installation workload and difficulty for overseas projects, while fully leveraging the quality and efficiency of factory-based production.

Large‑Scale Equipment Manufacturing & Technical Standards

The furnace has a total weight of 750 tonnes, a maximum diameter of 13 meters and an overall height of 50 meters.

Its manufacturing involves key processes including multi-stage diameter variation (including spherical transition), multi-segment splicing with different thicknesses, and overall heat treatment, featuring high precision and complexity.

The equipment is designed strictly in accordance with ASME standards using American standard materials, and has passed full-process inspection by ASME-authorized inspectors, successfully obtaining the ASME U Stamp certification.

Efficient Execution & Delivery

Leveraging its strong capabilities in direct reduction process equipment, detailed design and manufacturing of large non-standard equipment, as well as advantages in materials, manufacturing, inspection and quality control under international standards, the Sinosteel MECC project team carried out meticulous organization and tackled key challenges.

All critical procedures – including detailed design, review, material procurement and inspection, equipment manufacturing, hydrostatic testing, painting, packaging and nitrogen protection – were efficiently completed within the contracted schedule.

With collaborative efforts from all parties, the equipment was loaded and shipped on schedule, achieving high-quality manufacturing and delivery.
